A note from the doctor: Many years ago when athletes complained that their energy bars sucked, I started making them little portable rice cakes using sushi rice in an attempt to mimic a Chinese rice dish called Zongzi that I grew up with. It was a total pain in the ass, but it transformed the pro peloton and made riders happy. Unfortunately, not everyone agreed with the change or with me. I got a lot of shit from old school staffers and even had about a dozen rice cookers stolen from me one season. And so the rice cooker became my symbol for resistance — my tool for standing up for my heritage and for what I believed in. It was through that fight and in not taking anything too seriously that I made myself a “this is my rice cooker” t-shirt.
